‘She’ portrays a contemporary view of the iconic subject of art over the centuries, that of the mother and child.  However, this is a far more in depth exploration of, not only mother and child, but of child and mother and how their relationship changes and develops as the child grows up and becomes an adult.  Perhaps on the surface ‘She’ seems to be a departure from Chris Avis’ previous work on female identity and the ageing process.  The lighter touch in this work is in tune with the subject matter and allows the apparent simplicity of the work to convey the complex nature of human relationships.  The sensitive use of the material gathered and the complimentary quality of the photographs and video enable the work to flow together with into one joyful narrative.
